13/09/09 - Bournemouth Sunday Division 3 Match

Joscelyne Builders vs Ferndown Locomotive

Half Time: 3-0
Full Time: 4-3
Scorers: Kyle Eaton, Jack Roberts x 2

Ferndown Loco took to the slopey pitch on the sunbaked Slades Farm last Sunday to take on a familiar foe in sizeable form(s) of Jocecyln Builders.

In the past few seasons Loco have found themselves in the same league as the ‘Builders’ and played many a tight encounter against this well organised team. Although last seasons corresponding fixture went down in the loss column, Loco were determined to build on the first match day victory of the 09/10 season and bring back the 3 points.

Loco Lined up with a strong looking line up: GK: Legg, DF: ‘Tank’, Jackson, Jimmy, Bendy MD: Philips, Smith, Webby, Gray ST: Eaton and Haines

Its fair to say the opening exchanges were classic Sunday morning football fare, with possession being exchanged quicker than vanerial diseases in Walkabout on a Saturday night. However its also fair to say of the scrappy 20 mins or so Loco created the clearer cut chances and with a pacey attacking line up should really have been ahead.

25 mins in and as loco built pressure with a series of corners, the builders countered and a defense lapse/ short on numbers saw loco go 1 down. This was the catalyst for a crazy loco loco 10 minute spell where 2 further goals were conceeded with little in terms of resistance from the ferndown team. Half Time couldn’t come soon enough and Loco went in 3-0 down.

HT: 3-0

Thankfully no young children were present (apart from the ever youthful haines brothers) for the gaffa’s half time team ‘talk’, but needless to say opinion of our first half collaspe brought around a couple of changes and a change in attitude for the loco lads. Jack ‘i’m not called Rodgers’ Rodgers came on for a ‘hobbling’ Smith and young Philips was replaced by another loco debutant and welcome addition to the team… PC Constable.

The team talk definetly did the rick and Loco were able to build on the first 20mins dominance in the second half but this time adding the vital ingredient… a peppering of goals.

The first probably the move of the match (from a loco perspective at least) as the ball was splayed across the middle of the park by the law enforcer, who found fellow debuntant and ex heather player ‘tank’ who played a raking right foot cross, plum on to the nogging of the goal machine Eaton… 3-1 and loco we back in this.

Cricket players say ‘with 1 comes 2′ plus all that other ‘googly’ and ‘deep extra legg cover’ rubbish, but it was true for Loco. And shortly after the first goal Jack and Kyle combined well and the young Mr ‘Rodgers’ pounced to lift the ball over the on rushing keeper to make it 2 goals for Loco and 2 in 2 games for Jack. 3- 2

Pressure building and the comeback in full flow, the builders relatiated and struck a killer blow as their pacey front men where given too much time on the ball to slide the ball past the loco number 1. 4 -2 with 15mins to play Loco faced an uphill battle.

It was a goal too far in the end, Buck Rodgers managed to grab a consolation in the dying seconds firing home a volley from close range, but with seconds left the ref blew up and Loco left down but not out. A sterling second half come back showed not only do we have the correct attitude within this squad along with the talent, we also have depth in every position of the park for the gaffa to be able to chop and change as required. So onward on upward loco!!!

Ferndown Locomotive FC started what promises to be a successful 2009/2010 season this Sunday, at home against newly promoted Dorset Knob. With weather conditions ideal and the always superb green green grass of King Georges pitches looking bowling green flat the scene was set for the start of a new campaign.

06/09/09 - Bournemouth Sunday Division 3 Match

Ferndown Locomotive vs The Dorset Knob

Half Time: 0-0
Full Time: 4-1
Scorers: Matty Groves, Kyle Eaton, Paul Andrews (GK), Scott Philips

With some important new signings over the summer months, Loco lined up with a blend of youth and experience, In Goal; Kris Legg, Defence; Ben Bendy Haines, Keith Jackson, Big Jim, Neil Dall, Midfield; Matt Webb, Ali Carmichael, Andy Smith, Jonny Haines, Up Front: Kyle Eaton & Matty Groves. Subs Paul Andrews, Jack Rodgers & Scott Philips.

1st Half:

Loco kicked off showing some signs of early season rustiness, possession being conceded cheaply, in the first ten minutes loco we’re fortunate that the two corners given away were not punished further with Kris Legg pulling off a top draw save high to the near post after one of the tall Knob players found space for a header.

However these early jitters where soon put to bed as the loco lads got in to their stride, retaining the ball better and being quicker to breakdown ball than their opponents. Loco always looked dangerous going forward with the searing pace of the frontline creating a few early chances. Some quick thinking by a sober Keith Jackson who took a long defensive free kick quickly over the heads of the Knob defence (including ex loco player Chris The Polish Hip Hop Hopkins) enabled Matty Groves to burst to the by-line only to see his well cut back pass blazed over by the on rushing loco midfielder Smith.

As the half progress Loco seemed to control the game to a greater extent, playing with width we were knocking the ball around well. Again chances came and went after not being taken by Neil, Kyle, and Smith whose efforts found either defenders on the line, keeper or post to be denied giving loco a deserved lead.

As is often the way if you dont take your chances when on top opportunities arise for the opposition and Loco were fortunate not to be punished, after a long through ball from the Knob defence was latched on to by their forward, only for Big Jim to slide in and make a ‘man and ball’ tackle which looked clean and in the area. However the ref did not agree with either and awarded The Knob a hotly disputed freekick right on the edge. Thankfully this was well dealt with by the new central defensive partnership of Jacko and Big Jim. With the scare over loco went in to the break 0-0.

Second Half:

The second half started in the same vein as the first with loco slow to settle in to their game, some good attacking play by the opposition either snuffed out by the impressive new defensive loco line up or on occasion drawing saves from Leggy.

Although The Knob made the better start to the second half it was Loco who took the lead after some quick flowing counter attacking football which left the opposition defence pulled out of position and Kyle slipped a well weighted ball through to his new striking partner, Matty Groves duly obliging and smashing the ball home at the second attempt after the first was well parried by the oppo goalie. 1-0

Loco then made a quick substitution bringing on Jack Rodgers for his first taste of loco action, slipping into a central midfield berth after Ali made way.

The young loco player had only been on the pitch before a couple of minutes before he received a potentially leg breaking challenge from an over eager Knob midfielder, this tackle was the catalyst for a the next few unsavoury minutes, which had very little to do with football. The result of this highly charged and aggresive couple of minutes led to several collisions in the middle of the park, in which acusations of elbows were thrown and caused a previously uninvolved Knob player to grapple and connect with punches to the face of the usually sedate Smith. Both players were lucky not to be sent from the pitch.

Order restored, the game continued with loco pressure and a second goal was always on the cards. Kyle ‘the GOAL machine’ Eaton slotting the ball home from a tight angle after good work by the loco wide midfielders stretching the play. 2-0.

Further subsitutions were made with firstly the introduction of Scott Philips for Matt Webb and then Paul Andrews for the injured Smith.

As the game started to drift away from The Knob, a hopeful ball up to their tricky forward resulted in Loco conceeding, after a tight turn and low shot from The Knob striker. After battling in to a good lead loco faced the final ten minutes 2-1 up.

Any fears of letting the 3 points slip from our grasp were banished when, our new goal keeper Paul Andrews was found unmarked by the Goal Machine Eaton, Paul took his first touch for loco and with his second slammed the ball home to make it 3 - 1.

The game now gone, discipline again lapsed and a couple of the opposition were lucky to finish the game after some tired/late challenges.

With time ticking down there was just time for the best goal of the game and therefore the season so far… Scotty Philips take a bow… 30-35 yards out from goal the young loco player found space and having noticed the keeper of his line, his well floated shot found the top left hand corner of the net. Cracker! As he and youth team player Jack ran off (hand in hand) to celebrate, the final whistle sounded and after quiet a battle against a physical Knob side Loco started their new season with 3 points and good team performance.
