Ferndown Locomotive FC: History

Ferndown Locomotive ‘T&D’ FC, started off as a 5-a-side team, which then developed into an 11-a-side outfit. Players were gathered through various sources, including the AFCB Internet Team, the team started out in the Hayward League Sunday Division Seven in 2002 with Chris Parker as Manager.

In 2003/04 season Loco under the management of Paul Phillips when the side remained unbeaten for long periods, the West Moors based side won the league title convincingly by nine points and promoted to Hayward League Sunday Division 5.

In 2005-06, the club was re-branded as Ferndown Locomotive FC. This was to reflect the natural roots of many squad players, and new home venue where we played – King George V Playing Fields, Ferndown. During the season, we not only held our own in the league, but we ended up getting promoted once again, for the second time in three seasons.

The 2006-07 season saw Locomotive competing in Hayward League Sunday Division Four. Once again, Locomotive had another fruitful season, at the end of the season Paul Phillips, who had been working tirelessly in the manager’s position at Loco for 5 seasons, was to step up as Chairman, in order to shake the team up a bit with a fresher faced manager. This position was taken up by current player Paul Cashmore.

Under Paul Cashmore’s management Loco progressed and in 2007-08 secured promotion to Hayward League Sunday Division 3. In the 2008 – 09 season Paul stepped down as manager and was replaced by then Club Secretary Alistair Carmichael.

With Ali’s stewardship the Ferndown club continued to improve as a club with the introduction of a gruelling preseason training schedule and weekly training sessions, helping the club climb the division three table, and Ali’s team were unfortunate not to be promoted in 2010-11 when Loco finished 4th in Division 3.

Due to an expanding family Ali stepped down as Manager and Loco embarked on a new season in Division 3 without Mr Carmichael involved in the clubs running for the first time in 6 or so years. The recently formed committee moved quickly to appoint then club captain Jimmy Redford as new loco manager. After a successful preseason with new recruits added, Loco started the season well going 10 games unbeaten in league and cup, which has brought this Ferndown side to their first ever Semi Finals appearance in the clubs history.

Special mention in the Ferndown Locomotive FC history to:

Sean Barker – all-time Top Goal Scorer and Loco Legend

Ali Carmichael, Andy Smith and Sam Davis (joint) – All Time Appearances.
Rob Frank, Scott Mountfield, Chris Parker, Paul Moore, Sean ‘Salva’ Barker – Founding Fathers of Ferndown Locomotive T&D FC

Chris Parker, Paul Philips, Paul Cashmore, Alistair Carmichael, Jimmy Redford – Loco Managers

Andy Smith (Secretary), Dave Hall (Chairman), Ben Haines (Treasurer) Jonny Haines (Social Sec.) – Current Committee

Ferndown Locomotive FC would not be in existence today without the generous donations made by our sponsors in previous years.

However it is fair to say that current sponsor Koozai, a Southampton and London based Intelligent Digital Marketing Company, have provided the level of investment in the club not previously seen, which has secured the clubs future for this and many years to come. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank Ben Norman (Managing Director of Koozai) for his continued support. www.koozai.com

Queens Park Reserves vs. Ferndown Locomotive, Chapel Gate, 15-01-2012

Today’s game was always an eagerly anticipated game for Loco’s footballing calendar and the game certainly didn’t disappoint with events. With Loco playing 4 games without a win it was really important to get back to winning ways and again the strength and depth of the squad came into play with arguably 6 first team starters not available for selection. WithQueensParksitting pretty at the top of the league and Loco looking to take advantage of their games in hand it potentially could have been a struggle with squad players needing to up their game to continue the fight for starting places and they certainly did just that.

With only 10 minutes to go before kick off Loco only had a bear 11 but thankfully Sean turned up sporting a rather Paddington bear style scarf swaying in the cross winds as he casually strolled over to the pitch and Jimmy then appeared followed shortly after by Pete ensuring we had a squad for the game ahead. A quick warm up from the militant Jacko and we were ready to commence. Jimmy decided to go with still the unproven 3-5-2 to try and go with a more attacking look as Loco had only managed 1 goal in the last 3 games. From the sidelines Queens looked up for this game as the Loco team gather a quick focus on the game ahead there was a short delay to game commencing as the referee that Queens were supposed to supply controversially didn’t show! With one of their supporters willing take the rains as referee the game was ready to commence 10 minutes late.

At a blustery cold; frost-free Chapel Gate – The game was certainly going to be dominated by the gusty wind that was never going away and was certainly there to be taken advantage of in the first half as well as the low sun. With only several minutes in Queens were already penning Loco in their own half with excellent use of the lofted long ball allowing the wind to their advantage they managed to go one nil up after Loco failed to clear a corner; their forward managed to lash a well taken strike in the penalty area destined for the back of the net; 1 nil Queens.

With a few fierce challenges flying in, deliberate trips, pushing and shoving it was already looking like “one-of-those” games with the referee seemingly ignoring off the ball incidents it looked like a scrappy game ahead. Loco looking like they could get into the game when they got the ball down and played football with Keith and Dave looking to try and got a hold of the ball and with Jacko’s massive manhood swinging in the wind he was still able to play the ball into the space. Loco’s first half play seem to go all down the right hand for Loco’s long-legged smithy who was trying to make some surging runs from his unfamiliar role of right wing back but the ball just kept coming back and the defence, especially Mike Franklin who was doing a good job to keep the strong pacey forward quiet so far.

With some good play down the middle, a quick one-two between Matty and Simon allowed Matty to get in to a great position down the wing picking out Ali with a quick short cross with what just looked like a simple half volley tap in needed but an awkward bounce meant it he wasn’t able to make clean contact with the ball scrapping his studs allowing the keeper to get a decent save pushing it out for a corner.

Against the run of play Queens Park got the ball down and played a quick counter attack and again using the wind to full advantage they swung the ball from right to left and before Loco knew it was 3 on 3 and the Queen’s forward on the edge of box from the left hand side cut in and struck a fantastic left footed shot beating stand in Keeper Dan Carr at his near post, 2 nil.

After 35 mins Queens Park were getting the upper hand and a long range effort from one of their midfielder’s again taking advantage of the wind just sailed over the cross bar. In the last few minutes Loco again showed signs of their old winning way football with some neat touches and clever passes, Loco worked their way to the home team’s penalty box and after a deflected shot came back out to Si Ward he was able to closely control the ball and the twinkle toed forward managed to get a left shot struck neatly with power into the corner of goal, 2-1.

Quickly after Queen’s kick-off Loco’s 11 unsurprisingly looked more confident and they were looking to press the home team but unfortunately for Loco the half time whistle came to the delight ofQueensParkwho were really under pressure in the final 10 minutes. Jimmy decided to make a change at half time and took himself off and headed for the showers with Pete Kunzi his replacement, Smithy slotted in at the back and Pete filling in at right wing back.

Queens kick off the second half and straight from the off Loco forced an error from the home team and with the ball being stroked to Ali, he takes a delicate touch forward lining up a shot just inside the area and he drills a shot into the top corner leaving the net bulging so much so; the ball wraps itself inside the netting leaving the goalkeeper to literately pick it out of the net, 2 -2.

The game looked destined for Loco to grab 3 points with Kieran now seeing a lot more of the ball as the ghastly wind taking any lofted ball to the left of the pitch. With Loco playing more give and go football they certainly looked the more dominant and pushing theQueensdefence deeper and deeper into their own half. Kieran with a couple of cross come / shots and also Si took a free kick that he had been practising before the game failed to test the keeper in the second half and we really needed to take full advantage of any chances as the make fit referee seemingly ignored obvious fouls and off sides given by Adam causing the Loco players to get on the referees back. He actually became aggressive and swore at caretaker manager Johnny “Harry Redknapp” Haines after he asked why he had given a free kick on what only seemed a (unusually) fair challenge by Groves using the reply of and I quote “I don’t give a f@*%, stop moaning you p#~*k” – nice charming old chap, not!

With still 2 subs left it was just simply too close to make any changes for the moment and Adam was doing a fantastically ignored-by-the-ref job of linesman and Jim “Joe Jordan” Legg was acting as Haines’ number 2. A brief scare occurred when what looked like a leg breaking challenge from the Queens left forward on Pete “the rash” Kunzi but he managed to bravely shake it off and to no surprise the referee disappointedly again choose to say nothing to the forward and reluctantly gave a free kick.

Another close shave as Queens pressed well working the ball into the area and “Van Da Carr” did well to get down low to stop a shot and then almost immediately after that another shot was cleared off the line by the impressive Smithy and a sigh of relief could be seen on the touch line with all Loco’s hard work nearly lost in the final 10 minutes. With 4 mins to go (we know this as we asked the referee how long was left) a tactical change was made with Ali coming off for Jim.Queensquickly had a corner within 30 seconds of the substitution being made which was quickly cleared away, to the centre of the park and a quick pass played to Matty who then turned the centre back like a cement mixer was suddenly through on goal. With Jim to his left but with the penalty area almost entered and only the rushing out keeper to beat to try and steal all 3 points unfortunately the only stealing that occurred must have been the salesman that sold the referee his watch! We were convinced that the 43 and 44 minutes symbol must be missing from it as he blew for fulltime even though there was at least two minutes left until full time.

Although we shall never know if Matty would of scored; this type of act was ungentlemanly and unsporting – this was clearly demonstrated by the Loco players at the end of the game; especially Smithy who almost needed an injunction put on him by the referee as he understandably expressed his frustration and disappointment with almost clenched fists but he was the bigger man and had to walk away as the referee disregarded anything we had to say with a smug dirty smile knowing full well what he had done.

With a much needed point Loco continue their march for silverware determined to win against Queens for the return leg at “The George”. An all-important Semi-final on the horizon but the importance is to focus on next week’s game and look to secure our first win in four games by winning next week. Well done guys though; a well fought frustrating game and a noticeable uplifting feeling today even if we didn’t have the best of starts to the game today; it’s important to take the positives from the game knowing we can beat them at home and with the reality of being in the mix for the league title trophy come the end of the season lets get back to our winning ways.

Ferndown Locomotive vs. Boscombe Celtic (away) League game

A new year, A new season, A new manager, new players and something else new…… a new loco scoring record!!!!

So the newly awaited season has finally arrived and what a start! Forget the English Premiership; Bournemouth Sunday League Division 3 is where it’s happening. With an impressive pre-season, fantastic training sessions and only a mere 21 players’ signed on things are looking promising for Loco which has been built from a strong backbone by previous manager Ali and the current committee.

The new manager Jimmy Redford chose his starting 16 for Loco’s first game of the season away to Boscombe Celtic @ Wingfields, Christchurch. In past seasons Boscombe Celtic have always had a bit of a bad reputation and I can’t think why? (I think the last comment should be followed by the annoying acronym of LOL that’s so often used in today’s youthful text messaging world.) The weather was looking grim but the team sheet was great and Jimmy’s starting 11 didn’t fail to impress. A strong back 5 resembling the solidness of Arsenal’s in the 90’s , an exciting and creative midfield; some comparing it to Barcelona’s currently fluidity style and possibly the league’s best forward line that’s bound to get goals, goals, goals. With quality on the bench and players to come back into the fold it’s no wonder Loco were comfortably in front by half time of what was always going to be an exciting, aggressive and eventful game.

GOAL: Loco kicked off the first half and it wasn’t long before Loco dominated from front to back and left to right. Already some surging runs from Jacko, strong tackles by Ayton was looking like a tasty partnership in the centre of the park and it wasn’t long before Jacko got Loco off the mark. Si ward took a poor free kick but it still managed to reach Jacko who punished the home team with the first goal, 1 nil

GOAL: It wasn’t long before the self proclaimed Keith “Macho Man” Jackson took his second; almost wrestling 3 players at one time whilst dribbling the ball and taking a shot across goal. Although the keeper looked like he could have got something on to it the ball bobbles over the keepers stretching body and hits the back of the net, 2 nil Loco.

Jimmy Redford already getting ideas of who to rest for Thursday’s game and only 15 minutes in; probably a bit early to discuss changes (said Cunny) and one of The Legion of Doom brother’s Bendy Haines looking as solid as ever in his (unself-proclaimed) best position; left back - flooring the right midfielder with a solid challenge. The game was fast paced in the first half and Loco’s new dimension of play was really taking shape not even giving the home team half a yard on the ball and the pressure was too much for them and the third goal was surely not too far behind. A somewhat frustrated Matty Groves still lived up to his lively reputation and with the new season barley kicked off he was already on his final warning and it will come to no surprise that he found his way into the referees book shortly after with a yellow card for Matty Groves for constant “chat back” resembling Harry Enfields character “Kevin” as everything is so unfair and I think they are both ginger if I remember rightly? The new Loco number 1 was brought into action once in the first when a surprise bit of possession from Celtic caught the away side off guard and they nearly scored had it not been for but Adam Woodland pulling off a good save putting the ball out for a corner which then came to nothing. Some sexy football by Aryton in front of goal that even Ruud Guilt would of been impressed, after he linked up with Ward and Groves.

GOAL: He then managed to call “nuts” on a player and then take his chance by bending his goal bound shot bottom right hand corner, 3 nil.

Very little to comment on in the first half except Loco are looking player for player alot better than them – Cunny and Jimmy commanding from the back, Bendy and Levi overlapping well, Chris and Johnny seem to be taking it round players for fun on the wing, Jacko and Aryton are box-to-box and Ward and Groves are linking up well up front.

HALF TIME

SUBSTITION: With Loco looking comfortable ahead already, Redford decided to take off Jacko who had been suffering from shin splints since about 1997 with Andy Smith replacing him in the centre of the park.

GOAL: The second half kicks off and with less than a minute gone Groves bags his first goal of the game, pressurising the centre back who makes a mistake and Groves takes advantage and goes pass the keeper for a tap in, 4 nil.

GOAL: Only two more minutes have passed and Groves gets his second and Loco’s 5th! Big kick from Loco’s keeper and Groves managed to get on the end of it and races in to the 18 yard box with the ball and slots it bottom corner, comfortable lead now and looks like this could go into double figures 5 nil

John Haines is really starting to get involved in the game with some good runs down the right wing and getting some serious chalk on his boots but takes a whack for the team as his attempt to challenge an aerial ball, he takes a knock but manages to shrug it off. A precise long ball by a more confident Levi “roots” Copland is nearly met by Si Ward but the Celtic’s centre back powers through him with a strong challenging header taking Ward by surprise but not even Loco’s twiglet version of Berbatov could do to be fair. – Looks like some changes are going to made as there is movement on the bench

SUBSTITUTION: Chris is struggling with the knock he took in the face in the first half and its a straight swap for Mike

GOAL: Some more excellent play by Loco, stringing pass after pass making the home side look really poor now as the second half is nearly half way through and Johnny Haines turns Loco’s hard work with a well taken finish on the half volley and leathers it across goal destined for the bottom corner, keeper no chance, 6 nil.

SUBSTITUTION: Both top goal scorers are off, Matt G comes off before getting sent off and Rich oddly does the slowest lap of honour before coming on!

GOAL: Rich goes right wing and Johnny Haines fills the vacant gap in centre forward of which he craves. Rich “I love to dress up and wear gold make-up” Steel puts a good ball through to J. Haines and a slightly rubbish strike by him takes a lucky deflection and goes in, he’s trying to claim it but that has to go down as an own goal 7 nil.

GOAL: Johnny Haines gets onto a toe punt through ball by Luke Aryton as he makes a forward run and takes his opportunity well taking his second of the game (definitely not a his 3rd, 2nd goal was a deflection I’m afraid Johnny). 8 nil

Some good pressure by Smithy who wins the ball and then loses it and then wins it again and eventually gets the free kick he deserves after being floored by two Celtic players. Almost straight after Celtic try some passing and Richie attempts a tackle and takes out the full back, the “Goldust (nice C***) terrier” is on his final warning already! Those socks down his shorts are doing him no favours by the way as Groves’s kindly points out from the sidelines his package is looking huge, but he has such small hands and feet… Strange! Si ward picks up the ball dribbles it 10 yards but his frustration of not getting on the goal sheet is showing as he takes a wild swing of a shot and it goes out for a throw-in nearly taking out the old lady walking her dog. Johnny Haines fails to pass another ball with an attempted Messi-style lob, that really lacked any height, if only the centre back was 2ft 6in it would of been a great attempt. Another Loco corner and Loco’s new gaffer can’t quite get on the end of it and makes minimum contact and it goes out for a goal kick, how he’d love to get a goal right now and it looks like anyone is capable of scoring as Celtic are falling to pieces all across the sidelines. Speaking of sidelines the Celtics lineman is arguing with Olly over what the off side rule is, turns out neither of them know what it is!

GOAL: Jimmy’s dominating heading ability pays off as a good headed clearance finds its way to Mike on left wing and then to Aryton, who proceeds to take on 3 players and slots it bottom corner, his hemoriods are really starting to pay off as he’s looking really strong – sorry I meant steroids. 9 nil

GOAL: Mike goes from provider to scorer as he takes his opportunity with another through ball by Aryton and bangs it top corner, the keeper is never getting that 10 nil!!!

GOAL: With only minutes to spare Si Ward chasing down players with his new found fitness and he gets his chance, takes it past 3 players and could of possibly passed it to Johnny Haines for his hat trick but he wants a goal and rightly so as he takes it comfortably and gets his name on the score sheet, 11 nil!

FULL TIME

To summarise then a fantastic team performance from the Loco team against a poor Celtic side who never really turned up and Loco took the game to them; camping in the home side’s half virtually all game. In all honestly it could have been 15 or 20 in the end but most importantly from a defensive perspective a clean sheet. If Loco can keep up this form and with its squad of players; is it too early to be talking about silverware that looks certainly to be destined for the club? Still a lot of games to go but likely to be an exciting season and a prospect of a cup run(s) and it goes without saying were all already looking forward to Thursday’s game at home to Burns Lettings.

Man Of Match – Luke Aryton, fantastic all round game with two goals

Gimp Of Game – Olly, for not wanting to come on in case he got hurt

On a bright football friendly morning at Whitecliffe Rec, Loco approached this vital Sunday morning league match with a hugely depleted side but nevertheless hungry for 3 points and hungry to amend last weeks disappointing result.

Team – Jimmy, Levi, Webby, Sean, Richie, Oli, Dave, ‘Cappin’, Arj, Hopkins, Jonny

Without upto 11 regulars missing (for various reasons) any other team may have struggled to field a team but Loco’s depth of squad allowed for the show to go on! With stand in player/manager Sean Hebdon stepping in his tactical options were limited with Hopkins in particular playing an unfamiliar role upfront.

The first half was largely a non-affair with goal action limited for both teams. Fernside actually started the game with 10 men but Loco could not capitalise on this but Fernside were quickly up to a full compliment of players after 15 minutes. Webby, Oli, Kirk, Richie, Arj, Dave and Hopkins; who have been limited for game time recently, got up to speed very quickly and were involved heavily. Oli looked lively as him and Levi linked up well on the right hand side playing Jonny and Arj in on occasions. Oli’s enthusiasm bubbled over as he pasted one of their defenders earning a ticking off from the ref and a yellow card.

With Kirk driving forward from midfield the only real threats to goal were a snatch shot by Jonny and a Hopkins volley into the keepers chest.

Half-Time: 0-0

The second half was where the action was and it was Fernside who started the brighter. A set piece was floated in from their left hand side and minus a linesman the Loco defence was breached as their man (arguably in an offside position) headed on to help the cross ball into the far corner. Loco’s threat was minimal in the second half as their defence was first to every header despite the valiant efforts of Sean and Kirk in the middle of the park. The referee was too soon influence the game in a negative fashion as Sean was harshly judged to have handled the ball even though he clearly connected with his shoulder. Jimmy was every bit a match for the Fernside player who connected poorly with the penalty kick, just as Jimmy dove to his right to scramble the threat away.

It was Fernside again however who looked hungrier for the points as they rifled in a second from a corner that wasn’t cleared. Their player controlled it just outside the 6 yard box, spun and fired an unstoppable right footed effort into the opposite left corner, no chance for Redford.

With 15 minutes left and with the effort the Loco lads had shown it was inevitable a clear cut opportunity was destined to be created. It arrived from a corner that was scrambled out to an on coming Levi Roots to slam in on the volley from 18 yards, it’s still unclear whether it was intentional or whether he meant to clear it. Game on!

Sean went onto hit the bar from a speculative shot from distance and struggled to connect with a cross from Jonny out wide but Loco were threatening. They were up until the referee had another shocker and spoilt the game. On the edge of the box and with his back to goal the Fernside striker controlled the ball with the use of his arm, with the defence waiting for a certain whistle the striker unfairly slotted the ball into the bottom corner. 3-1 Fernside.

With minutes remaining Jonny snatched a trademark consolation goal by rounding the keeper after a Seany through ball but it was too little too late as the final whistle blew.

On the whole it was a close match and a draw would have been a deserved result to reward the Loco lads who turned out and gave 100%.

Full time: Fernside 3 – Loco 2

ROBBINS CUP ROUND 2:

TEAM – Jim Redford, Levi Roots, Jim Legg, Cunny, HipHopkins, Andy Smithpiece, Dave Hall, Mike Excel, Lawrence of Arabia, Sam Canty Score, Si Ward SUBS- Oly, Jonny

On a leaf covered pitch in the middle of the ghetto, two teams were to do battle for the honour to have their name in the next round of the ROBBINS CUP.

All the money was on Locomotive in the lead up to the game with 6 divisions separating the sides but it was West Howe that started the brighter. Ferndown were being harried by the younger and hungrier side and outrun through the midfield on this tiny little pitch. West Howe deservedly took the lead after an uncharacteristic Constable error at the back. With the opportunity to clear, he instead dilly dallied and teed the ball up for a Fernheath player to then knock it over his head for the striker to run onto. Redford in goal came rushing out but a little toe poke saw the ball trickle in to the back of the net.

In all fairness, the first half as a whole was bloody awful, but on 30 minutes a true piece of class from Mike Excel got Loco an undeserved equaliser. The ball came in to the box, was cleared by a defender and after one bounce, Excel smashed an unstoppable volley in to the far corner.

Loco began to press as West Howe slowed and finished the first half in the ascendency. It was Mike Excel again who sparked the magic as he swung a free kick in from the left hand side of the area, with it avoiding everyone and skidding off the surface and in to the far corner with the West Howe keeper put off by Smith’s attempt at kicking it.

A chomping-at-the-bit Oly came on for an intoxicated Smithy who pulled out a top drawer impression of a 5 year old as he stomped of to the changing rooms, luckily for Loco the influential midfielder returned to watch the second half.

The second half was all one way traffic with Fernheath being restricted to the odd break that was marshalled well by the Loco defence. Ward smashed in a sumptuous volley from Oly Sutcliffes’s cross to put Loco in control at 1-3 shortly after the restart. Next was flying winger Lawrence’s turn to shoulder barge his own player off the ball, took a touch and smashed a shot that the keep palmed in off the bar. The keeper won’t want to see the replay and will undoubtedly feel he should have saved it.

With Loco at 4-1, Dave Hall was replaced so that Loco goal-scoring machine Haines could have a run out. Dave and Mike controlled the game for Loco in the centre of the park and Dave got a deserved break after putting in a good shift. Ward dropped back in to centre midfield and Haines went up top to partner Sam ‘can’t get off the mark’ Canty.

Loco were passing the ball relatively well and under little pressure from West Howe and Ward scored his second after a bit of a bundle in the area ending with a left foot strike to scream it in to the far corner.

Ward now has 6 in 5 games, but Haines, not wishing to be overtaken as top scorer this season smashed in an unstoppable volley from 12.5 yards out. The defender misjudged his header and after one bounce Haines smashed it over the stranded goalkeeper.

Overall it was a deserved victory, with Loco not really getting out of third gear, hopefully the momentum can now carry on for next week!

MOM – Mike Excel for his goal scoring antics and level headed influence on the game throughout.

GIMP – Andy Smith for him half time tantrum!

Alderney Manor v Ferndown Locomotive

Slades Farm 24/10/10

This was a Hayward Div.3 crunch match, a 6 pointer of epic proportion to ensure that both Loco and Alderney Manor don’t get sucked into a relegation dog fight. Loco strode into this epic battle in buoyant fashion with a tremendous 16 man turn-out, all ready to step-up and change the recent negative tide of results.

The line-up

With the return of Dan ‘Van Der’ Carr in goal, Loco skipper Jimmy Redford returned to partner Sean Hebdon in the heart of defence. Levi’s recent dynamic performances deservedly saw him regain the right back spot along with our Polish international Chrisov Hopkins donning the left back spot. The midfield saw Smith-piece on the right, the Duracell bunny Keith Jackson partnering the work horse Dave Hall in the middle with Lawrence, keen to appease the ridiculous air-shot from the prior week on the left. New man Sam Canty partnered fans favourite Jonny Haines up top. This left Oly, Webby, Ali, Phil and Mike Excel chomping at the bit to step in.

After a bizarre cycle shorts/sneaky boxer shorts inspection from the ref the game at a fresh feeling Slades Farm kicked off.

The opposition were able to string together some early passes together and looked dangerous with some marauding midfield runs. Loco however stood strong with the twin towers Sean and Jimmy snuffing out anything Manor had to throw at them.

Once settled Loco started to assert their presence and this was largely down to a Jacko started to put his mark on the game from the midfield engine room. The scoring was opened on 20 as Jacko broke from the centre and fed Jonny on the left who darted past the defender to sling it across the box into the path of a stampeding Smithlar. The keeper got finger tips to the cross causing Smithy to adjust his gangly limbs, only to play a sublime (and completely intentional?!?!?) 1-2 with the goal post and finally bundle it in from 4 yards out, Loco 1-0!!

With the wind in our sails it was Loco again 5 minutes later, as that man Jacko spread the ball out to our Syrian international Lawrence of Arabia. He instantly tucked it inside to Jonny who dinked past a player and slotted a ball through to the galloping stallion Keith Jackson to get it out of his feet and fire a left footed shot past the on-coming keeper. Loco 2-0!

It was squeaky bum time until half time though as Manor reappeared and threatened to get on the score sheet but our offside trap stayed firm and when called into action Dangerous Dan Carr in nets was equal to everything Manors frontline had. Loco saw out the half positively with Levi striding forward at every chance, Loco also hit the bar twice, once from a Jonny corner and Dave Hall powerfully connecting with a Seany free kick, only to be flagged offside.

Half-time- Manor 0 Loco 2

Tenacious Webby replaced the shoulder popping Levi at right back. Within 10 minutes of the re-start Manor had pulled the game level, with some defensive mix-ups but it was a Loco stalwart who was about to halt an all too familiar Loco decline. Another pestering run from the whippet Sam forced a corner. Lawrence guided the set-piece in and Captain marvel Jimmy Redford rose and punched a bullet header into the net to make it 3-2 Loco!

Jonny’s stomach decided it wanted to chuck up so was hauled off with Player/Manager Ali Carmichael ready to show his troops how it’s done! Manor however had other ideas and instantly made it 3 apiece.

Ali was having none of it and rolled back the years with a 15 minute hat-trick. Owed much to Sean’s deliveries Ali’s positioning was spot on as he commanded the 6 yard box with both an unchallenged header and volley, quickly making the game 5-3.

Smith-piece was putting in a very effective shift in also as he linked up with Sam who was desperate to get his Loco account open and for the second game running he won Loco a penalty as he was tumbled in the box. There was only man who was going to take it, Ali comfortably made it 6-3 and in turn celebrated his first Loco hat trick in some time.

Celebrations were cut short as Manor went up the other end and won themselves a penalty against the run of play. DC determined amend the penalty he just gave away pulled out a lightening full length reaction save to deflect the well stuck penalty to safety. A truly top drawer save.

With minutes left and as Manor desperately pushed on to salvage something from the game, Loco broke and found themselves 4 on 1. Lawrence had possession and like Loco’s own Gareth Bale he drove from his own half to finish coolly tucking under the helpless keeper to open his Loco tally. 7-3 Loco!

Afterwards the changing room was ecstatic. A hugely eventful game with 90 minutes of passion, commitment and ultimately belief, Loco were back fighting deservedly earning 3 valuable points!

…..

MOM – Ali Carmichael for his match turning hat-trick

GIMP – Chris Hopkins for picking the ball up before it went out of play and talking himself into a yellow card.

Loco returned to the home of Bournemouth Sunday League Football to face a newly renamed Southbourne Athletic (formerly JS Sports) at Chapel Gate. With an ex loco player in their ranks, we arrived determined to repeat the 0-4 result from the previous season.

12/09/10 – Away vs Southbourne Athletic

Loco Lined up: Jimmy Redford (GK) Sean Hebdon, Sean Hebdon Jnr, Chris Hopkins, Levi Roots (DF) Keith Jackson, Dave Hall, Andy Smith, Oli Murrs, Bender Haines (MF) Jonny Jonny Haines (ST)

The sun shone on loco last sunday as a match which could have been ruined by one of the most inept refereeing displays ever to grace the Sunday league arena ended with a fine 1-2 scoreline and ensured we picked up the first 3 point haul of our 2010/11 season.

Loco took a deserved lead mid way in to the first half, but not before having a goal chalked off for offside and creating several other good chances, in form Haines linked well with new signing and singing sensation (best x factor voice) OLLLLLYY MURRRS, down the right hand flank and as Haines wriggled free of the CB he cooly slotted the ball home. 0 – 1

The opposition countered this set back well and we had big Jimmy Redford, inspired by having his missus watching in the ‘stands’, to thank for a couple of blinding 1 on 1 saves as he proved last weeks under performance was a thing of the past. Loco went to the break one goal to the good.

Half time – 0-1

The second half saw loco take control once again of the game, thanks in no small part to the midfield generals of Hall and Jackson, the latter playing out of his skin and for the 3rd match running sober!! Loco we’re so much in control that their captain was heard to utter the words… ‘come on guys, they are running riot here’.

This encouraged us only further and we were rewarded with a second goal and a second for bang in form JJ Haines, as he again made a nuicance of himself enough for the CB to miss his header and Jonny duely oblidged, not before mugging off their keeper with a cheeky drop of the shoulder which left him with a finish even hip hop hopkins couldnt have missed 0 – 2 and loco in total control.

Subs were made and promising signing Richie Steel was brought on in place of Andy Smith, minus one ball after a clumsy tackle from the oppo keeper.

What followed next were 10 minutes of farcical football, fair play the referee was called in at the last minute he also happened to be the oppositions manager but come on…. The cleanest tackle you have ever seen outside the box by a country mile resulted in the home team being awarded a penalty… even the kiddie winks on the pitch next to ours were giving him grief. The ‘penalty’ was dispatched. 1 – 2 and undeserved.

The game then threatened to turn nasty and its a compliment to both teams that it didn’t. Loco hung on to a get a well deserved 3 points.

MOM – Keith Jackson
GIMP – Sean Hebdon

Loco lined up for their first home game of the season against a familiar oppenent, Fernside FC. Close matches against the Fernside outfit in the past ensured we arrived ready for a close run game and as it turned out we weren’t dissappointed

05/09/2010 – Home vs Fernside

Loco Lined up with: Jimmy Redford (GK) Dave Hall, Levi Roots, Matt Webb, Chris Hopkins (DF) Bendy Haines, Keith Jackson, Mike Excell, Scott Philips, Andy Smith (MF) and Jonny Haines (ST) with a strong bench of Phil, Ali, Oli.

The game kicked off in the first of many autumn showers and loco took time to get to grips with the greasy surface, which was duely capatalised on by the Fernside attack as they slotted home from close range after a mix up in the loco defence. 0-1

It took this goal to galainise the loco ranks and some slick football down the right, which in the words of new signing Simon Ward ‘football to make you smile’, including 2, one twos, the first between ‘the string puller’ mike excell and andy smith and then mike and jonny, jonny pulled the ball back to the edge of the area where Andy had continued his run to fire a low half volley in to the bottom left corner. Loco goal of the season so far, if I do say so myself. 1-1

The stalemate continued until close to half time with loco arguably playing the better football and coming close through in form marks man jonny haines a couple of times, however by the break loco found themselves 1-2 down as the continual attempts to play the ball over the top by Fernside finally found a striker in an onside position and he raced clear and slotted home at the second attempt.

Half Time: 1-2

The second half started with a rejuvinated loco looking to draw level as soon as possible and within 5 minutes the game was level, Loco goal scoring machine Jonny Jonny Haines (so good they named him twice) pounced on some lacluster Fernside defending to finish well again in to the bottom left. 2-2

An injured Matt Webb made way for Phil to make his home debut, Ben Haines dropping in to CB from LM, Andy moving across to LM and Phil settling in to CM. The game unfortunately continued the same vein, and Fernside again got the wrong side of the loco back line after another long ball, though there was a massive suspision of offside. 2-3

Loco felt rightly aggreived to be another goal down and showed great spirit to battle back, and force the most contensious decision of the game, as Jonny Haines raced forward and he was unceremoniously chopped from behind in the area. However some interesting linesmanning and refeering, resulted in a pen being award then retracted, much to the glacticos fury. However from the resulting freekick, Phil bent a peach of a cross to another stand out performers forehead and Dave Hall wheeled away . 3-3

That shold have been that, with mere seconds left on the clock, Mr Hall and Redford got themselves in to a bit of a mess on the edge of the box as another floated long ball found the head of the Fernside tall striker who did well to steer his header in to an untended net and break loco hearts. 3-4

Cracking match for the neutral and played in a really good spirit despite some interesting reffing desicions. We will be hoping to reverse the result when we visit Fernside later in the year.
